Dear Isaiah,

As you enter your second week of college, I wanted to offer you a few words of encouragement and advice. You’ve always had an incredible ability to adapt and make people feel at ease, and I know that same gift will help you thrive at Penn State.
When we moved into the apartments in Temecula, you were sad because we had left your friends on the block, and you asked me what you should do. I told you to take your scooter and play outside, and you looked at me like I was crazy, saying, “What am I supposed to do, go door to door?” To this day, I still don’t know precisely what you did, but by the next day, you had ten new friends! That’s your magic, Isaiah. You make wherever you are feel like home, not just for yourself but for everyone around you.
There have been so many times when I’ve heard your friends say that you were their first friend or the one who made them feel comfortable. You’ve always had this natural warmth and openness that draws people in. I think back to the first day at Temecula Valley Charter School—oh, you were SO MAD about having to start at another school! It took you ten minutes to resign yourself to the fact that this was happening, and you gave me that mad face, turned around, and said, “Fine, I’m going to go make friends!” And, of course, within five minutes, you came back with a new friend in tow. That’s who you are, Isaiah. You don’t wait for the world to come to you; you embrace it with open arms.
I know that being at Penn State might feel a little overwhelming right now. It’s a big place, and you’re far from home, but remember who you are and what you’re capable of. You’ve done this before, and you’ll do it again—only this time, the stakes are even higher, and the rewards will be, too.
So, as you settle into this new chapter, here are a few things to keep in mind:
Find engaging things on campus: Penn State is full of opportunities, and you’re not at a commuter school anymore. Dive into the campus life and all it has to offer. There’s always something happening, so don’t hesitate to get involved.
Be open: Keep your heart and mind open to new experiences and people. College is a melting pot of cultures, ideas, and perspectives. Embrace it all, even the things that might be outside your comfort zone.
Prepare for homesickness: It’s natural to miss home. When it happens, know that we’re just a phone call away. We can even plan a virtual movie night to make you feel a little closer to home.
Join groups that have off-campus events: Sometimes, the best way to bond with others is outside of the classroom. Explore the town, go on adventures, and create memories beyond the campus.
Leave your door open: Literally and figuratively. An open door can be an invitation for someone to stop by and say hello. Keep yourself open to the new relationships that are forming around you.
Understand that you may have 'temporary friends': Not everyone you meet will be in your life forever, and that’s okay. Some friends are meant to be temporary, but they still play a valuable role in your journey.
Invite someone new to breakfast, lunch, or dinner: One of the best ways to connect with others is over a meal. Don’t hesitate to ask someone new to join you; it’s a simple act that can lead to lasting friendships.
Be a connector: You’ve always been great at bringing people together. Continue to introduce friends to each other and create a community wherever you go.
Take care of your body and spirit: Whether it’s through meditation, practicing stoicism, taking a nature walk, or just finding time to read, make sure you’re nurturing your whole self. College can be demanding, but when you take care of yourself, you’ll find it easier to handle whatever comes your way.
Isaiah, you have a gift for making any place feel like home. Penn State is just the next chapter in your journey, and I have no doubt that you’ll make it your own. Remember, you’re never alone in this. We’re always here, cheering you on, and ready to support you whenever you need it.
With all my love and pride,
Mom
Love you kid
