The Torchbearer’s First Choice

Today marks a moment that signifies far more than a vote cast—it’s your declaration of belief in the world you wish to help shape. This first opportunity to participate in a presidential election is a privilege not just of citizenship but of active engagement in the greater conversation of humanity. In the flurry of your first semester at Penn State, amid the rigors of budgeting, studying, working, and finding your place as a young adult, this act reminds you of your connection to something larger than yourself.

Navigating these weighty decisions at just nineteen without fully seeing their long-term impacts is a challenge few embrace so wholeheartedly. Your drive to ask questions, understand history, and pursue truth sets you apart. I see how your pursuit of knowledge and growth fuels your academic path and your desire to be a responsible global citizen. You aren’t content to be a bystander but determined to be a force for progress. That, my son, is rare and beautiful and I am reminded of a quote from George Bernard Shaw:

"This is the true joy in life, being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one, being a force of purpose instead of a feverish, selfish little clod of ailments and grievances, complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy. I am of the opinion that my life belongs to the whole community, and as long as I live, it is my privilege to do for it what I can. I want to be thoroughly used up when I die, for the harder I work, the more I live. I rejoice in life for its own sake. Life is no brief candle to me. It is a sort of splendid torch which I have got hold of for the moment and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible before handing it on to future generations.”

Shaw’s words echo the essence of who you are: “a force of purpose,” ready to burn brightly for yourself and those around you. It’s not always easy to stand firm, especially when stepping into roles and discussions that stretch your understanding and test your confidence. But this is where you thrive—in places where you can contribute, learn, and become more resilient.

Remember that as you explore new classes, clubs, and potential internships, everything valuable must be earned with intention and heart. Whether you’re staying up late perfecting a project or engaging in a spirited debate on global policies, know that your efforts are shaping the mighty purpose you’re meant to serve. Life’s most fulfilling moments are when you step forward despite uncertainty and give your all, much like Shaw’s “splendid torch.”

As you walk through those open doors, know that your energy, spirit, and willingness to embrace challenges will set you apart. Victories light the road of purpose and how we push ourselves in those in-between moments. Continue to see life as more than a brief candle, but as a light that can inspire others and pave the way for future generations.

Meanwhile, Smokey is blissfully unaware of the world’s complexities, now napping after attempting to claim victory over a squeaky toy. Grandma is undoubtedly trying to concur yet another pile of boxes has to be moved inside. I’m here, as always, surrounded by my work and feverishly knitting a cap to mail to you before you go to Germany.

Know that as you keep burning your torch brightly, you’re never alone. We’re proud of you today and always.

With all my love and admiration,

Mom

PS, I'm enamored by your exciting, celebrity-studded week with Keegan Michael Key and Giancarlo Esposito and your first college football game with Penn vs. Ohio State! I can't wait to hear how the whiteout game goes and your continued experience as a newly minted employee and taxpayer!
